Natural dimethyl sulfide gradients would lead marine predators to higher prey biomass

چکیده

Abstract Finding prey is essential to survival, with marine predators hypothesised track chemicals such as dimethyl sulfide (DMS) while foraging. Many are attracted artificially released DMS, and laboratory experiments have shown that zooplankton grazing on phytoplankton accelerates DMS release. However, whether natural concentrations useful for correlated areas of high biomass remains a fundamental knowledge gap. Here, we used concurrent hydroacoustic surveys in situ measurements present evidence spatially concentration air seawater. Using agent simulations, also show following gradients would lead higher than swimming randomly. Further understanding the conditions scales over which these occur, how they by predators, predicting impact future changes ocean predator foraging success.

Dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) and dimethyl sulfide (DMS) emissions from biomass burning in Australia

[1] We identify dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) as the major reduced sulfur-containing gas emitted from bushfires in Australia’s Northern Territory. Like dimethyl sulfide (DMS), DMDS is oxidized in the atmosphere to sulfur dioxide (SO2) and methane sulfonic acid (MSA), which are intermediates in the formation of sulfuric acid (H2SO4). The mixing ratios of DMDS and DMS were the highest we have ever de...

Modelling the contribution of sea salt and dimethyl sulfide derived aerosol to marine CCN

The concentration of cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) in the marine boundary layer (MBL) was estimated from dimethyl sulfide (DMS) flux, sea salt (SS) emission, and aerosols entrained from the free troposphere (FT). Only under clean air conditions, did the nucleation of DMS derived sulfur (DMS CCN) contribute significantly to the MBL CCN. The accommodation coefficient for sulfuric acid mass tran...

Biosorption of lead and nickel by biomass of marine algae.

Screening tests of different marine algae biomas types revealed a high passive biosorptive uptake of lead up to 270 mg Pb/g of biomass in some brown marine algae. Members of the order Fucales perfomed particularly well in this descending sequence: Fucus > Ascophyllum > Sargassum. Although decreasing the swelling of wetted biomass particles, their reinforcement by crosslinking may significantly ...

Prey attack and predators defend: counterattacking prey trigger parental care in predators.

That predators attack and prey defend is an oversimplified view. When size changes during development, large prey may be invulnerable to predators, and small juvenile predators vulnerable to attack by prey. This in turn may trigger a defensive response in adult predators to protect their offspring. Indeed, when sizes overlap, one may wonder "who is the predator and who is the prey"! Experiments...

Modelling the Effects of Prey Size and Distribution on Prey Capture Rates of Two Sympatric Marine Predators

Understanding how prey capture rates are influenced by feeding ecology and environmental conditions is fundamental to assessing anthropogenic impacts on marine higher predators. We compared how prey capture rates varied in relation to prey size, prey patch distribution and prey density for two species of alcid, common guillemot (Uria aalge) and razorbill (Alca torda) during the chick-rearing pe...
